Michael Benoit on ABC’s Good Morning America

Written by sideshowraheem on September 6th, 2007 in Uncategorized.

I think I said in one of my posts here right after the Benoit tragedy that there was no excuse for his actions, but I have to admit that extensive brain damage due to repeated head trauma is a pretty good one. Here’s a clip of Chris Benoit’s father Michael Benoit on ABC’s Good Morning America explaining what probably caused Benoit to kill his wife and son.

Michael Benoit will also be on CNN’s Larry King Live tonight at 9pm I’ll try to post that video if I can find it.

I have to admit that this doesn’t clear the Benoit name, but I am relieved that perhaps he couldn’t control his action.

im hoping this just takes some of the heat off the wrestling-and-steroids witch hunt. but then, maybe it’ll put heat on wrestling’s-too-dangerous.

This doesn’t clear him completely in my book but you got to cut the guy a little bit of slack if this is(true and it kind of looks like it is) then his years of us enjoying Benoit taking chair shots to the head and hard bumps contributed to these deaths as much as anything.

Wrestling isn’t the only sport you can get a concussion in. Seeing as wrestlers aren’t actually trying to hurt each other when they perform, it’s one of the least likely “combat” sports that you can get a concussion in. Mixed martial arts is much more now than wrestling, and competitors are much more likely to end up with a concussion there than in wrestling.

Everything can be fatal or damaging to your health, including popping the cork on a bottle of bubbly, so it hits you in the face and kills you. Putting heat on wrestling as being dangerous, because something goes wrong once in a long while, is retarded.

As I said over a month ago, we need to wait for more information before passing judgment. This proves my point clearly.

Even if these brain injuries cause him to have violent episodes it’s still Chris Benoit’s responsibility to seek help and take care of the problem.

Raheem- As someone with a mental illness (Autism), it’s not exactly easy to decide, “My brain doesn’t work normally. I should tell a doctor this.”

We can be all high and mighty about seeking treatment, but it’s not something that you realize you need to do. Only others can catch it, but then they have to convince you of it. Again, NOT EASY.

The insanity defense never gets over with me Benoit had to have a moments of clarity when he realized he was becoming more violent this is not something he was born with it progressed over time. Some how he managed not to have violent outbursts around his friends in the wrestling so why can’t he control himself around his family. The brain damage is probably a contributing factor but I’m not gonna place %100 blame on that not even the reports that the doctors filed says brain damage was the whole cause of his violence.

  9. Jade Says:

I didn’t say it was the whole reason, and it doesn’t excuse anything. It does remove the senselessness from it, though.

Even if he wasn’t born with it, a gradual onset up symptoms is the hardest to pick up on, as it seems the same day-to-day, and only raises issues when looked at in a longer time frame.

If you have a bad month or two, and start to cop and attitude towards others gradually throughout it, are you going to suddenly stop and go, “What happened to me? Why am I acting like this?” Probably not. You’re going to just say you’re having a bad day, even if it grows worse each day. This was no different.

I was just thinking about something. Has anyone ever accused Benoit of being stiff in the ring.

In order to believe this you have to believe that at least once during his matches in the heat of the moment he would have gotten “real” with someone.

i dont know, i still blame him for the killings, just a killer with brain damage is a killer none the less.

what i find amazing is that even with all these findings of drastic damage these hosts try to act as if they give a shit about the family of the benoits, but the only reason they bring people onto their shows is to make steroids the issue and steroids the reason he killed his family. thats why i cant listen to anything on these “news” shows anymore, they are so ignorant about this, why would they know about anything else?

i think if there is one thing benoit could do with the damage it is wrestle. after doing it for so long, its probably he’d be able to do it in his sleep, if the time arose.

dms- You have an interesting point about him in the ring. That’s a REALLY thought provoking post :)
