Countdown To Wrestlemania 24: Wrestlemania VII

Written by sideshowraheem on March 12th, 2008 in Uncategorized.

Wrestlemania returned to Los Angles with Wrestlemania VII, which was originally planned to take place at the L.A. Coliseum, a stadium that holds over 100,000 people. But because of threats that had been issued towards the WWE primarily related to Sgt. Slaughter and his portrayal of an Iraqi sympathizer, the event was moved to the smaller L.A. Arena.

The undercard to Wrestlemania may be just as interesting as the main event. The Ultimate Warrior defeated Randy Savage in a “retirement” match although seven months later, the Warrior had left the WWE and Savage had been reinstated. Wrestlemania VII marked the first Wrestlemania appearance and win for The Undertaker as he defeated “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka in 4 minutes and 20 seconds it was also the last Wrestlemania appearance for WWE Hall of Famer Andre the Giant. Country star Willie Nelson was in attendance and sang “American the Beautiful” after the Nasty Boys won the World Tag Team Championship they partied all night with Willie Nelson. When they showed up the next day at a live event they only had one title belt with them because they had given the other one to Nelson as a souvenir.

Hulk Hogan’s main event match against Sgt. Slaughter at Wrestlemania VII was more than a match for Slaughter’s WWE Championship. Shadowed by the fallout of the Gulf War, Hogan was hell-bent on defeating the Iraqi sympathizer for the honor of America, proving that he was a true American hero. Hogan would go on to defeat Sgt. Slaughter in 20 minutes and 26 seconds and win the WWF championship at Wrestlemania for the second time.
