WWE Monday Night Raw Discussion: King of the Ring Tourney
Written by Lex on April 21st, 2008 in Uncategorized.
We’ve been talking about it all week, and the King of the Ring Tournament is finally here. Don’t forget that tonight’s Raw starts at 8 EASTERN, 7 CENTRAL, or you’ll be left out in the cold for the first part of the tournament. That would be lame on your part.
No word yet from WWE on who will actually be in the tournament, but the main event of Raw will be an eight-man tag team match: Undertaker, Kane, John Cena and Triple H v. Randy Orton, Edge, JBL and Chavo Guerrero. That has all the makings of a great main event–I love the big tag matches.
Also, as Sideshow has already reported, all three remaining presidential candidates will have video-taped appearances on Raw. So basically, if you’re so dumb that you base who you’re voting for on which candidate knows the most about wrestling, you can make your choice tonight. As much as I like wrestling, what these three say won’t have a bearing on my political choices.
Discuss Raw here.

WWE leaked part of the video:

i think they’re delaying it an hour in Canada, so, bullshit, im probs not gonna be on for any of the discussion after it starts in the states.
April 21st, 2008 at 5:39 pm
ill be honest, im stunned that the wwe actually got all three candidates to do this. i guess it’s true that any publicity is good publicity. and i have to say, i cracked up when obama said “do you smell what barack is cookin?” not entirely original, but pretty hilarious nonetheless.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:05 pm
My moneys on Kennedy to win the KOTR.

Sid for King
April 21st, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I hope Santino would win, but remember everyone that this is a 3 hr RAW! They want ratings, especially after the last RAW rating
EXPECT A LOT OF STARS ON TONIGHT
April 21st, 2008 at 6:17 pm

So what show is the big show on
April 21st, 2008 at 6:37 pm
-ARICE
Big Show is technically on the Smackdown roster, not that it matters these days.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:40 pm
I love the new replay videos since they switch to HD. Makes them more exiting. Like you are more in the action. Plus I love the HD. I am a HD whore
April 21st, 2008 at 6:41 pm
All things considered this Big Show/Kahli build up hasn’t been bad at all. Although I’m sure the match will be terrible.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:41 pm
sideshowraheem
how do feel about JBL
April 21st, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I think JBL is probably the best and only true heel currently on the WWE roster but I don’t think he has a shot in hell at winning on Sunday.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:46 pm
I Feel that he can win. But they should give it to triple H
April 21st, 2008 at 6:48 pm
What No Kennedy, they were doing so good with the first half of the bracket then they just had to fuck it up with Kahli and the midget.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Y2J chances looks really good
April 21st, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Eh…leave it to WWE to screw this thing up. Just when I thought they were winning me back, we get a mockery of a match.
At least we get Regal v. Finlay…that will be a good match.
Still, one question:
Where the FUCK is Shelton Benjamin?
April 21st, 2008 at 6:59 pm
WWE always drops the ball
April 21st, 2008 at 7:01 pm
OMG HBK got his swagger back
April 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Oh my god… “Hill-dog?”
April 21st, 2008 at 7:14 pm
i wont be joining the discussion due to me forgetting what time RAW started
I knew that it was 3 hrs but didnt remember that it would be early
Also I dont like watching RAW, or anything for that matter, without watching it from beginning to end
Therefore I will watch the 1st hour online tomorrow morning and watch the rest on my TV
It suck because My DVD had it set to record but I dont know what happened
RAW will be Jsnwwfless tonight
April 21st, 2008 at 7:17 pm
“Boy who is a friend which makes him a boyfriend!”
I was bumbed about the KOTR but Santino just cheered me up.
April 21st, 2008 at 7:21 pm
I have to agree with everyone here. The first half of the bracket was great, but the second is terrible.
I hope we get Punk vs Regal, though. I’d really enjoy what those guys can do together.
April 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Punk FTW
April 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Holy shit! Punk’s gonna win this thing!
April 21st, 2008 at 7:31 pm
THAT’S BULL SHIT
April 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Yay! I get my Regal vs Punk match. This should be steller.
April 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I hope the 8-man tag match is the main event. I don’t want to be late to work to see Punk win.
April 21st, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Holy crap McCain was terrible!!
April 21st, 2008 at 7:50 pm
How come McCain got more time then Hillary and Obama?
April 21st, 2008 at 7:59 pm
…………Sigh…………………………
April 21st, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Wow. They ruined the presidential thing, too.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!? Someone bring out the shark, because RAW is getting ready to jump it.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I can’t even put into words how bad this is. I would rather watch a non stop loop of reverse battle royals then another of these trump/rosie bullshit matches.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm
The only thing worse then a crowd booing is a crowd being completely indifferent to what’s going on.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Oh god… Why Umaga? Why?
April 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Here comes Umaga to try to save this bit.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Match Of The Year!!!!! Why did the Republican get more time. Umanga!!!!!!! He might make this good
April 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
this is a herpe sore on an utterly good RAW
April 21st, 2008 at 8:10 pm
I don’t want to see anymore. Where’s the eye bleach?
God, I have to go to work after this… That means It’ll be stuck in my head all night. Thanks, Vince! ARGH!
April 21st, 2008 at 8:10 pm
kill that cunt!!!
April 21st, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Why the hell would you send out Umaga? I’m glad he came out to put and end to this bullshit, but unless they are trying to put Umaga over as a face, they should have sent out somone else.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:12 pm
If the Raw writers want to do comedy sectches then they should contact Lauren Michaels and try to get a job on SNL and leave us the fuck alone.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
I just wanted everybody to know, that was not the real hill-dog of Obama. Those were actors.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
and yes we need a replay of that shit. dont replay clips of hardy v punk. we wouldnt want that
April 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
what another who is a bigger whore contest?
April 21st, 2008 at 8:18 pm
I never though it possible, but that last “match” was so bad, the divas comming out and wasting time is actually and upgrade.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
who was that? I know who like three of the divas are
April 21st, 2008 at 8:26 pm
If Punk doesn’t win I’m gonna break my TV.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
WHAT THE FUCK!!! WOW. Leta make a guy who only wrestles once in a fucking blue moon the king of the god damn ring. Great way to push your Money In the Bank winner.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
**Sideshow picks up his very expensive plasma screen TV and throws it out of his living room window before retiring to his bedroom for the evening.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Regal wins! Regal wins!!!!! Plus we haven’t seen VKM in like two months. Good Raw
April 21st, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Sideshow you go Plasma? I prefer and use LCD
April 21st, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Wow, glad I stopped watching after the first hour. Ugh. What a waste.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
At this rate Punk will be cashing in that MITB on fucking Heat. Regal is a solid wrestler, but has never been, nor ever will be more then a mid card wrestler. King of the Ring should be used to push young talent, not award mid card vets.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Regal vs Punk was a great match. I like seeing Regal win matches, but Punk would have been the better choice to win. Regal gains nothing from it, really.
This Raw was really hit and miss. BIG hits and BIG misses. They’ve had nothing that runs down the middle (well, the Carlito match might qualify).
Glad I don’t have to sit through that clusterfuck match to see the end of KotR, though.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
haha boy was i right when i said they dont push young guys fuck this shit
April 21st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
AT least we get a 8 man tag to save this fucking show
April 21st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Seriously: Other than Cena, who’s under 34 years old and in the main event? They really need to push some younger stars or everyone’s going to retire at once and the viewership will die off since they don’t know anyone.
I’m reminded of WCW towards the end when I think about that…
April 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
hell yeah man thats how i feel right now
April 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Well there’s Edge(also 34) and Orton(28) but that’s it for the entire roster all the other main eventers are around 40 or older.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:58 pm
THERE IS NO GOOD YOUNG TALENT ! THE OLD GUYS SHOULD BE ON TOP……………AT LEAST THEY MADE EDGE A STAR.HE IS A WAY BETTER CHAMP THAN BATISTA AND RKO………ALSO Y2J SHOULD HAVE WON KING OF THE RING
April 21st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
If we assume Kane, Undertaker and JBL all will retire within the next 3-5 years then the WWE is in trouble if they don’t start pushing the younger stars.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
-ARICE
The WWE is full of young talent MVP, Matt Hardy, Cryme Tyme, Lance Cade, Paul London, Brian Kendrick, Santino Marella, Umaga, Kennedy, Kofi Kingston, Shelton Benjamin, Elijah Burke, John Morrison, CM Punk, Gregory Helms, Kenny Dykstra, and Jamie Noble are all 35 or younger, there young talent almost out numbers TNA entire roster.
April 21st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
yeah but they never get pushed good is what were trying to say all the guys u mentioned r all midcarders and will forever be midcarders
April 21st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
shelton benjamin elija burke john morrison matt hardy have all become lost causes only 2 i see comming out to be on top in a few yrs is punk and mvp
April 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I feel sorry for Punk.
What was the purpose of the King of the Ring other than to fill 3 hours on a useless show
April 21st, 2008 at 9:27 pm
shit Raw
What a waste of the KOTR. I was looking forward to it all week too
Bummer
April 21st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
I’m sure WWE gave King of the Ring to Regal just to say thank you, there’s no way they have any sort of reasoning or entertaining story in mind.
On the same token, they gave CM Punk, a wrestler who’s been on TV for under 2 years and on the C show that nobody watches, what is essentially a guaranteed world title run within the next year. Anyone can see if they don’t book him to win every match he is in right away, especially all the matches that are on the A show against established veterans and former world champions, then the fans will give up on him immediately.
WWE is so stupid, what they should be doing is pushing this mid-card face to the moon so unrealistically fast, toppling all heel contenders no matter who they are, so that the fans will cheer him. Wait a second, WWE hasn’t done that before, have they? Oh, right, I almost forgot Bobby Lashley. And what about that guy who gets cheered so much by all fans, John Cena? Both those guys were/are such fan favorites, I have never ever heard anyone boo either of those guys. WWE should do the same thing they did with those guys to Punk, that way everyone will accept him as a legitimate champion, no one will boo him, and the smart fans will all be happy.
*Just because we like Punk doesn’t make him any different from any other young wrestler.
April 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I’m not saying it was a great episode of RAW, or even a good episode of RAW; aside from a couple of the KotR matches, I thought it was really shitty. But you guys are all, uh, well, you’re criticizing the movie during the opening credits, you’re trampling the garden before the flowers have boomed, you’re complaining about you’re drunken family coming over for Christmas dinner before you’ve got the tree up and lit.
My point is, maybe this will turn out for the best. Look, Punk has been the least pushed wrestler before winning MITB out of all 4 winners; they were all odds on to win, Punk was empty space filler #6, they have to push him the right way. After Mania, he lost to Jericho; a month after Mania, he beat Jericho and almost won KotR, it’s a slow build i tells you.
April 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
-kanadian
The difference between Punk and guys like Cena and Lashley is at the time they got there monster pushes they where sub par in ring performers which is why the got/get boo’d by smarks. Punk if he were to get that kind of push would not have that issue because he is far better in the ring the those other guys just like how Lesner was over with smarks because he was great in the ring he didn’t get boo’d even though he got the same kind of push Lashley and Cena got.
April 21st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
amen
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:02 am
Waste of my time other than the first 2 matches
April 22nd, 2008 at 4:08 am
wow that was surprising! a very good effort by william regal! quite disappointed by CM punk’s performance though, perhaps he underestimated regal a bit. He’ll have to train harder for when he cashes in his title shot!
-jason
April 22nd, 2008 at 4:35 am
what an absolute waste of the prestigiousness of king of the ring. Is this marking the return of real to the ring? he’s the king of suplexes but shouldn’t be king of the ring.
I feel sorry for everyone’s dream kin of the ring (and my own) being ruined by this shambolic booking.
PWB FOR BOOKING RAW
April 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 am
Is it possible that Kennedy was supposed to win, but couldn’t make it to Europe so they replaced him with Regal?
Punk really needs to change his finisher, the GTS looks akward and more dangerous for him than for his opponent.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:10 am
- sideshowreheem
You’re kidding yourself. Punk is no different From Cena or Lashley. And if you think all the people who boo Cena are smarks then you are mistaken. Some of them are, but from my experience, even the most marky of male fans over 15 usually say they don’t like Cena because he always wins. Lesnar is completly different because Brock Lesnar was pushed as an awesome new HEEL, not a mid card face. If Punk starts showing up on RAW every week (without being drafted there) and jobbing out everybody he faces, eventually leading to to him winning the WWE title at, say, Summerslam, CM Punk will be CeNa Punk.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:26 am
Piggy–
This Raw was in Greensboro, South Carolina…so no.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 am
i personally dont think that CM Punk will be able to deal with the larger wrestlers which the WWE seem to always fantasise about.
How is he going to be able to GTS the undertaker or Kane, current champs that would squash him?
He’s nothing more than a good mid-carder.
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:36 am
Kennedy is filming a movie so he wasn’t supposed to win.
Sorry Kandian can’t agree. You just showed that the Money in the Bank winner is a geek because he got beat CLEAN by a guy who barely wrestles and when he does wrestle he loses.
That slow build is like the Serotonin build
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:42 am
Anyone who doesn’t think CM Punk can main event must not have ever seen the guy wrestle in ROH. When he came into the WWE he was over HUGE with the fans. He was getting bigger pops then Triple H (just go back and watch Survivor’s Series). However, no one is going to be able to get over working on ECW every week. They need to get him off that show, let him do some more mic work on RAW or Smackdown, and put him in matches that really showcase him. Give him some PPV matches with a guy like Chris Jericho and the fans will come around on Punk.
As for Cena and Lashley, well that’s another story. Cena was really over with the fans, until they started him on his steak of never losing a match for like a fucking year. No matter how much a guy is over, people get sick of the same shit day in and day out. Also it might not only be the smarks booing Cena, but that’s just because the casual fans will boo him because they think that’s the cool thing to do. And Lashley isn’t near the wrestler Punk is, and he is a black hole of charisma. Punk has a lot of charisma if the WWE would let him show it off a little.
I think the main thing I wonder about is why the fuck would you make a guy the MITB winner, and then not try and showcase him? Shouldn’t they be trying to build up his hype for his eventual cash in? I just have this really sinking feeling that he might end up cashing in that MITB for like an Intercontinental title shot or something like that, because they like to emphasize the fact that it can be used to get a shot at ANY WWE title.
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:05 am
-Shane Slone,
I agree 100 percent the fact that Punk wins the MITB at Mania and doesn’t have a match at Backlash is fucking insane. Not to mention having him tap to Regal a guy who is semi retired and doesn’t need a push how dose that help Punk at all.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 am
The KOR is not that big of a deal ! MVP, Matt Hardy, Cryme Tyme, Lance Cade, Paul London, Brian Kendrick, Santino Marella, Umaga, Kennedy, Kofi Kingston, Shelton Benjamin, Elijah Burke, John Morrison, CM Punk, Gregory Helms, Kenny Dykstra, and Jamie Noble none of those guys could be HBK Bret Hart Steve Austin Owen Hart Mr.Perfect Scott Hall Kurt Angle Triple H Undertaker Ric Flair Rock Davey New Age Outlaws Jericho Bull Dog Sting Nash or Piper because the new guys don’t have that real over all talent that so many of you think the do.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 am
-ARICE
All of those stars I named could be stars they are just as talented if not more talented then past WWE/WWF rosters it just that the writing and booking isn’t as good as it once was.
April 23rd, 2008 at 3:11 am
@ Lex
Rumors have it that Kennedy was indeed supposed to win.
Regal is a totally silly alternative. Why not Shelton???
Burke would have been the ultimately cool decision.
But Regal?
WTF?
April 23rd, 2008 at 6:12 am
- ARICE
You’re a fool to think that ni wrestlers of today will be stars. i bet if you asked most fans in 1989 if shawn michaels would make they say no way, some goes for if you asked most fans if steve austin would make it big in 1993. They are mid carders now but they’re not going to stay there.
April 23rd, 2008 at 6:28 am
Piggy–
I like Regal, but I agree…he’s a general manager now, as many have pointed out. Thing is, it doesn’t seem like they are ever going to seriously push Shelton or Burke.
