WWE No Mercy Discussion: Chris Jericho v. HBK, Ladder Match (UPDATED WITH RESULTS)
Written by Lex on October 5th, 2008 in ECW, Live Discussion, PPV, Raw, Smackdown, WWE.

(UPDATE 9:52 p.m.) Here are tonight’s results:
- World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match: Chris Jericho(c) d. Shawn Michaels to retain
- WWE Championship Match: Triple H(c) d. Jeff Hardy to retain
- Big Show d. Undertaker via KO
- Number One Contender’s Match: Batista d. JBL
- Rey Mysterio d. Kane via DQ
- Women’s Championship Match: Beth Pheonix(c) d. Candice Michelle to retain
- ECW Championship: Matt Hardy(c) d. Mark Henry to retain
Let’s face it: if you’re ordering No Mercy, it’s probably based on the strength of the main event. Outside of Jericho and HBK going at it in a ladder match, the rest of the card is a wash.
I think that’s mostly the bookers on Raw’s fault–they really haven’t made fans care about their part of the card. Throwing in a mask stipulation at the last minute for Rey Mysterio and Kane’s match is just a cheap way to get heat, and JBL has become more boring than I ever remember him being.
On the Smackdown side, I’m at least mildly interested in Triple H v. Jeff Hardy and Undertaker v. Big Show.
Still, I want to see a ladder match between Jericho and HBK more than anything on TNA’s upcoming Bound for Glory PPV, so my money is going to this show based solely on that match.

October 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I take:
Jericho
Hardy
Hardy
Batista
Big Show
Candice (WWE don’t you dare give that belt to that horrible wrestler that it terrible and is the worst, I hate you Candice, you are horrible!)
Rey Mysterio (DQ, but if it’s clean it still counts)
Could be an OK show. I take Hardy cause I want to see him get the belt and then lose it quick to Koslov or Big Show.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Wow…Hardy over Triple H…interesting, Kanadian.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I am only interested in the ladder match. How many title shots has Henry gotten??
October 5th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I think only 2, J.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Oh yeah, remember CM Punk?
Expect a five star match from him tonight.
Not. *rolls eyes* Seriously, how do you go from Show champion to not even a match at the PPV? I know him and RKO are teh next feud in line, but come on.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
SC,
They had to work in that awesome Women’s Title feud so they didn’t have time for also-rans like Punk.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
by the way who else thinks candice’s new music is the worst peice of shit song u ever heard?
October 5th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I’ll go a step further and say she’s the worst piece of shit.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I’ll go on and say its pretty much a forgone conclusion that Rey is gonna lose his mask tonight. The little marks will lose their minds to know that their hero will be forced to reveal his face to the entire world “FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME EVER”.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
hahahaha ohhhh how the young doesnt that wcw destroyed rey back in the day when he had to loose his mask he looked like he was 12 and wasnt marketable
October 5th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
my local theater is charging 14.95 a person. To you think it will be worth it to check this out?
I’ll take
Jericho
Trips
Big Show
M Hardy
Mysterio
Beth (due to Santino interference)
JBL (I don’t know why)
October 5th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
doesnt know
October 5th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
It’s worth 14.95 to see the ladder match, IMO.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
No, it’s not, Lex.
Y2J v. HBK has been stale since Unforgiven’s unsactioned match.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
see thats what happends now a days wwe has been having so many short feuds that most wrestling fans forgot about how great long feuds can be and this is the feud of the year in my book
October 5th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Yeah, seeing two of the greatest and most-innovative wrestlers of all-time in a ladder match is stale. My bad.
I’m so tired of people complaining about this feud…you’ve got to be crazy if you think it’s stale. What more could you ask for in the WWE? I mean, if you think this is stale, what else have you considered stale in the past? The Rock feuding with Stone Cold off-and-on for several years? Bret Hart v. HBK in an ironman match? Ricky Steamboat feuding with Ric Flair?
Granted, I’d love to see guys like MVP and Shelton elevated, but they are on Smackdown. Who else on the Raw roster would you rather see Jericho feud with? CM Punk? Sorry, I like Punk and all, but he’s been a lot more stale than HBK has lately.
October 5th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
jmart,
Right on. I think part of it is the fact that people have such short attention spans these days–they don’t like the slow build anymore.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
lex def remember when the hhh vs batista feud was going on and it was awesome cause it told a story and elevated batista into a superstar it was long but it was great like this feud with jericho and hbk and there slowly turning batista heel i think what will happen is he will win tonight then go to cyber sunday loose by getting ‘’screwed” again and he will go absolutely ape shit and become a monster thats obsessed with winning the title which is what Batista needs right now i think
October 5th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
JMart,
Very possible, I like the idea of a heel Batista.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I’m just tired of seeing HBK on top. I don’t know, it’s not so much stale as that I’ve lost interest.
I would say why but the list is rather long.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Matt Hardy d. Mark Henry with the Twist of Fate…back and forth match where Hardy would work over Henry’s leg and Henry would come back with power…not bad! Henry has really improved, and sold his knee well.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
If Hardy/HHH finishes the PPV, then Hardy will win
Personally I think Kozlov will fuck it all up
October 5th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
lol i swear i will be kozlovs biggest fan when he says”i must break you”
October 5th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Beth Pheonix d. Candice Michelle (thank goodness) despite Santino nearly screwing it up…
October 5th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Jericho/HBK has to end the show, it would be hard to follow…
October 5th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
what the hell? a 5 minute womens title match?
October 5th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Kane cutting a promo rambling about masks and monsters, so I guess its Mysterio/Kane time…
October 5th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
jsn,
Yeah, it was pretty short, thankfully–Candice whiffed on like her first five moves, I swear…it was awkward.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
lol shows how much the wwe womens division sucks balls
October 5th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
2 straight Kane/Rey DQs
why?
October 5th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Wow, Rey Mysterio d. Kane via DQ when Rey comes off the top to the outside and Kane hits him with a chair out of nowhere in mid-air.
After the match, they zoomed in on Rey, and he was saying that he couldn’t feel his legs.
Also, MVP is trying to talk to Vicki Guerrero for some reason…
October 5th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
cause wwe is stupid and want to continue this shity feud
October 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
“BORING CHANT!!!” hahahahahaaaaaa
October 5th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
MVP face turn?
October 5th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Hey Lex, I wanted to comment on this since the last podcast. I don’t think that the HBK/Jericho feud is bad by any means, but it should have ended in the “unsanctioned” match at the last PPV. That should have been it for that feud, because all the steam has gone out of it, all has been said that needed to be said. I’m sure they will have a good match tonight because they are both good wrestlers, but that doesn’t change the fact that the “feud” is and should be over.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
bathroom break. BORING chant will pick up
JBL sucks
October 5th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
lol at Batista’a Physique compared to JBL’s
October 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Batista is the new number one contender, shocker.
That CM Punk/Kofi/MVP/Tag Champs/Orton clusterfuck was a time killer if I’ve ever seen one.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Dynamite,
I get where you’re coming from. I’ve always been of the like mind that a big-time gimmick/intense match should be the blow-off. If they wanted to do a ladder match, don’t do the unsanctioned thing.
Still, I see no problem with them doing both. It’s better than the rest of the crap that’s going on!
October 5th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
JBL giving a speech. Maybe he’ll retire.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Nope, he’s thanking congress for the bailout, LOL
October 5th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
With all the talking, I’d almost think I was watching Raw.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
OK, now Cryme Tyme, the Divas and Sargent Slaughter just stole JBL’s limo.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Taker and Show are next…
October 5th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
which idiot in the back wrote that HORRIBLE segment?
October 5th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Yeah, seriously, short matches and crappy Raw-like segments so far. I don’t get it.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
this is why i dont buy many ppvs ne more
October 5th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Big Show d. Undertaker vio KO after 3 big right hands. Interesting. Wonder if they’ll do some kind of boxing match next.
Taker is clearly in a lot of pain, but he’s still pretty quick in the ring despite the knee problems. You have to admire that guy’s toughness.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
THEY HAVE TO STOP CALLING THESE MATCHES LIKE THAT!
All matches should end on a pinfall, dq, countout, or submissin
NOT A TKO
October 5th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Text poll says: 72 percent of fans are rooting for Jeff Hardy over Triple H. BURN!
October 5th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
HHH/Hardy not main event
That means that Hardy will lose or there will be DQ finish will Kozlove
October 5th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
JSN,
I think they are lifting that idea from ROH. Bryan Danielson has been doing that deal for a while now where he’ll hit repeated elbows on his opponent until they call it. Only difference is this was more boxing-style than MMA.
I actually liked that match, btw.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I can’t believe Kozlov is getting pushed this fast, ugh.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Lex, did you order this PPV?
or are just ‘watching’ it?
October 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I ordered it, that’s why there’s been so much filler. Anytime I order they do that, lol.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Funny thing is, I’m not even recording it on my DVR, lol.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
OMG LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Talk about BURYING Jeff Hardy.
So let me get this straight…Jeff Hardy hits the twist of fate and the swanton, but Triple H can break out of it before TWO and roll him up out of nowhere? TERRIBLE.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
awwwwwwwwww
HHH reverses hardy’s pinfall into a crucifix pin AFTER A SWANTON! not right
October 5th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
That’s some Triple H booking right there…
October 5th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Im not a Hardy mark, but I would be pissed and it would be a SLAP IN THE FACE of wrestling if Kozlov were to defeat HHH for the title at Cyber Sunday or Survivor Series when Hardy, a guy who has been with the company since 1995, couldnt do it
October 5th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
to* wrestling
October 5th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
HHH going WAY OVER Jeff Hardy?
Yea, didnt see that coming…
Lex, just a question from a near poverty college student to a PR guy with blogs as a hobby
October 5th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
How do you get so much disposible income to spend on PPVs?
October 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
scmike,
Didn’t get the question…
October 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Oh now I see your question, lol.
One simple answer, man…I get money. Also, being married means you have two incomes.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I want to see the HHH marks defend that booking. “Triple H never burys people!” Yea, right. That’s example #1A right there.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Also, Mike, in Texas, we don’t spend our entire income on housing like you California folks, LOL.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Wait…is the ladder match over?
October 5th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
OMG…when Jericho gritted his teeth there, it looked like he’d had one half-knocked out..must have been that see-saw spot earlier in the match…SICK!
October 5th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Also, @ Lex
My moms just moved to the south and the amount she pays for her HOUSE is the same amount she paid for a one bed-room apartment up here in NJ!
That shit just aint right!!!
I swear if I could take the heat I would relocate tomorrow
October 5th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
OMG he DID lose a tooth. That match was brutal!
October 5th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Jericho retains, btw…awesome ending moment where the belt was unstrapped and they were both at the top tugging on it. Jericho ended up accidentally head-butting HBK during the tugging and HBK fell off. Lance Cade also interfered near the end.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
So I am going to skip previous comments. But I saw a quick recap of the PPV. Who would have guessed that Trip would have on. I have defended the guy for years but it has gone to far now.
October 5th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
So there were absolutely no suprises at all. That figures
October 5th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
hahahahaha
yeah, I was making predictions for this at the top of the day, but I saw all my picks were pretty obvious and I’d catch some heat.
Yeah, actually, I was right on all the matches.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:08 am
I guess the only mild surprise might have been how the Taker match ended, but that’s it. I wish I’d have done predictions, I would have finally gotten some right!
October 6th, 2008 at 10:08 am
How can HHH live with himself. He is a ass for that bury of Hardy. I am not a Hardy fan at all but that was just pathetic. Give the guy the title for once.. everyone knows he wouldn’t have it very long. HHH needs to get over himself. What an douche.

Man that sucks how Jeff gets buried, I kind of figured he wasn’t going to win, I just thought if he didn’t win here he’s not going to win the belt, and that’s probably the case. Maybe Triple H will hold it until mania, that’s going to suck ass, if he does it’s going to be like when Cena held it for that year, he’ll have to bury all the heels: Big Show, Edge, Vladamir Koslov, Brian Kendrick; MVP’s already a jobber and he didn’t even got a real title shot.
At least Candice Mishitty wrestler didn’t get the belt. I was going to download it but I can’t find a torrent. Whatever, sounds like the ladder match was good, hmmm? how was the show overall aside from the Hardy burial
October 6th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Shit it would have been so much better if he had of dropped the belt, Triple H has gotten seriously boring as of late, and I’m growing especialy bitter for all the wins he’s getting on MVP.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
OK, let me say this. As you can tell from the comments above, I thought the end to that match was total crap and horribly booked. My beef isn’t the fact that Hardy lost–it’s the WAY that he lost with Trips countering both of his finishers with the cradle. It totally makes Hardy look like crap.
STILL, I think it’s better that Hardy not get the belt until Mania, it’s a more fitting place for him to get it considering the problems he’s had. Plus, I’d want to see if he were going to screw up again before I gave him the belt. I would have just rather have seen him lose to a Pedigree.

I disagree Lex, I think this was the time to put the belt on Hardy, you cant say you want to save things for mania in this business, what are you going to do until then. There are to many injurys to risk putting something off for 6-8 months. Plus by the time mania swings around it will be Somoa Joe all over again, it will be a year too late. I agree that the way he lost was crap, but I also think the fact he lost was the wrong decision.

As much as one would like to make the above comment spam, it’s actually a good read.
