TNA Turning Point Discussion: AJ Styles v. Sting

I think tonight’s TNA PPV has an outside chance at being a pretty good show. Here’s the card, courtesy TNAWrestling.com:
DOUBLE MAIN EVENT: TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
“The Phenomenal” AJ Styles vs. Champion “The Icon” StingDOUBLE MAIN EVENT: REVENGE MATCH
“The Samoan Submission Machine” Samoa Joe vs. “Big Sexy” Kevin NashTNA LEGENDS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
“The Instant Classic” Christian Cage vs. Champion Booker TTNA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The Motor City Machineguns vs. Champions Beer Money, Inc.Abyss vs. Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle
Grudge Match: “The War Machine” Rhino vs. X Division Champion Sheik Abdul Bashir
Knockouts Tag Team Match: TNA Women’s Champion Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed vs. Taylor Wilde & Roxxi
Plus, an X Division championship seeding match to determine the top contenders with Sonjay Dutt, Eric Young, “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal, Consequences Creed, Petey Williams, Jimmy Rave, Homicide, Doug Williams, Tanahashi & Volador
I’ve decided not to order the show, but it was close. TNA has done a good job with their programming over the past several weeks, and they’ve also done a good job by not filling this card with a bunch of ridiculous gimmick matches. Turning Point could be really, really good.
But here’s my caveat. In the co-main event “revenge” match, you’ve got Samoa Joe wrestling Kevin Nash. KEVIN NASH. I’ve always liked Nash from a character-development standpoint, but if you’ve been watching Impact! lately, you know this guy is limited in the ring–he always has been. Combine that with his age (49 years) and his previous injuries, and you’ve got a recipe for a boring wrestling match. It’s going to take a Herculean effort from Joe to make this match look good, and I just don’t see it happening. I cannot in good faith spend $30 on a PPV with Nash in the co-main event, regardless of what the rest of the card looks like.
That being said, if you’re ordering this, I don’t blame you one bit. Styles v. Sting should be good, and Abyss v. Angle should also be interesting. Hopefully they’ll give the X guys time to work, too. With the number of guys in that match, I’d imagine they’ll have to.
Discuss Turning Point here.

Here’s to AJ Styles winning some gold tonight.
November 9th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
This Angle Abyss match is basically them walking around the Impact Zone. Punch, walk 15 steps, punch, punch, walk another 15, punch…This is loong
November 9th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
I just read wikipedia and said the guns aint win…
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x-(
November 9th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Kurt Angle sommersaults off the stage onto Christopher Abysstopher. HOLY SHIT. I thought he was gonna eat the concrete, but he hits it beautifully. I held my hot dog near my mouth when I saw that spot. Holy shit, I was cringing as I saw Angle take that dive.
At least he’s still alive.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Blackhole slam, 1, 2 no.
Angle slam, 1, 2 no.
This isn’t that bad a match, guys. Now Abyss uses a chair. I thought he was anti weapons now? Kurt chairshot to the head, chokeslam - 1, 2 and 99/100ths.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Abyss gets a chair on his stomach, Angle hits a moonsault, and 1, 2, and 199/200ths. Abyss goes for the tombstone, Ankle lock, breakout, run the ropes, blackhole slam, 1, 2, no. I’m really liking this match…
November 9th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Angle is climbing scaffolding, something bad’s gonna happen…No more plunder, guys, end thte match! Enough plunder!!! Abyss teases military slam down to Spanish table, Angle European uppercut, Abyss falls to the table. 1, 2, 3. Angle over.
A little bit too much of plunder, imho, but still, PPV worthy match

Decent match. I thought it was going to be a short one.
Question to anybody…
Does the Legends belt actually count as a belt? If so, if Christian does win (which I don’t think he will) is it a official title change.
On the card it says TNA Legends Title….but who knows for sure?
November 9th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Looking back, Abyss took a 3 ft drop and people are calling the ending weak. I think it tells the story of Abyss just being so tired, that he had to go down to a spot like that. Kinda like a match in ROH ending in a stiff lariat after a bunch of other impressive moves.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Nash out in his red gear! Wolfpac!!! /1997 WCW mark nostalgia
So this match starts @ 7;15, get a 10 minute match out of Nash, then the title match goes 7:30 -7:45 a little rushed, this PPV is.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I meant 1996 Outsider, not 1997 Wolfpac, btw.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Joe getting pummeled into the post over and over, Nash gets tools out, and uses the tools to expose the turnbuckle. Joe is now getting the uppe hand. nash elbow and knee drops. Nash with upper hand. Run the ropes, joe uppercut (x4), run ropes, big boot to nash, SENTON. 1, 2 no. Nash out on ringside…Joe wants to go for a suicide bowling ball dive, but Nash waits and hits him with teh chair. cover 1, 2 no
November 9th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Signs of age or Joe’s weight??
(Note that Jacknife)
November 9th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Jacknife, 1,2 no. with my low expectatins, this isnt too bad of a match…Nash tosses joe into the steel, and he’s putting out (bladed) Jacknife #2, 1,2 no. Joe gets an orthodox armbar, Nash punches hi way out…REF BUMP?!?!?!? FUCKING SHIT, TNA. Lowblow to Joe, cover, feet on ropes, 1, 2, 3. Meh match. Sooooo much better than I expected. MEM is 3-0 tonight I think. If anything thsi sets up for a Styles win,…
November 9th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF??
NO WAY…
Wow. MEM is on fire tonight… I just hope that AJ will win.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
alowishous -
a little of both man, a little of both.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Someone in the chat brought up a poss. Daniels comeback to help AJ - now THAT would be ACE. Too bad he’s stuck as Curryman…
November 9th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Say match starts @ 10:35, they have enough time for a 13 min match, if they want to run the show until 10:50…
November 9th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
COME ON TNA!!! Tale of the tape after right after the introduction, JUST START THE MATCH ALREADY. I’m ready for a Styles title reign…
November 9th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Now Borash does his awful ring introductions, and this eats up some more time…Either AJ gets a quick win via rollup @ 9 min mark, or Sting gets a quick win via screwjob…Not gonna do PxP, I wanna see thsi match.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
You called it right on the money SCMike
November 9th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
AJ hits a Spiral Tap, goes for a 2nd, MEM comes out, AJ chases them off. AJ turns around, Sting misses a punch, Pele to Sting misses, Sting rolls him up, 1,2,3. CLEAN.
Bah.
November 9th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Someone said that this PPV was rushed…how? Every match got plenty of time.
November 10th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Thoughts overall…good, bad, so-so?
November 10th, 2008 at 1:08 am
Nick - I meant the main event would appear to be rushed considering TNA followed the unspoken rule of getting out of the PPV slot @ 45 after. but they left at I think 50-55
November 10th, 2008 at 6:42 am
Sting had to win. You can’t have a faction that calls itself the Main Event Mafia if they don’t have the belt. An AJ win would have effectively killed off the MEM.
November 10th, 2008 at 11:12 am
i think joe needs to talk to angle about loosing weight god hes fat
November 10th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
AJ aint win either?! Man this some bullshit!
November 10th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
jmart - Yea, we need some more body builders in the business, right?
November 10th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
SCMike- Yeah your right, but Im always happy when they strech PPV past the 10:50pm mark.
I thought this PPV was slightly above average. All the matches I expected to deliver, delivered, espcially Angle/Abyss. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Nash/Joe match.
