TNA Impact! Discussion: Boomer Sooner!

Written by Lex on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 in Live Discussion, TNA.

Oh wait, there’s wrestling on tonight? Really?

I swear, TNA gets the worst nights for shows: Christmas, New Year’s, and now, head-to-head with the National Championship game. They might as well move Impact! to Sundays so they can go head-to-head with the Super Bowl.

But seriously, for those of you who aren’t into college football, here’s tonight’s Impact! preview courtesy of TNAWrestling.com:

On Thursday night, TNA Wrestling returns to SpikeTV with two hours of Total Nonstop Action, just days before the “Genesis” Pay-Per-View epic event!

TNAwrestling.com has learned that more matches for “Gensis” will be announced on the broadcast!

In addition, the following matches are scheduled to take place:

- Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle will face Jeff Jarett’s longtime ally, BG James

- Speaking of Angle, the Main Event Mafia plan to speak out about “Genesis” and Mick Foley’s announcement that he is returning to the ring at the Pay-Per-View event! Both Mick Foley and TNA Founder Jeff Jarrett will be in attendance on Thursday night, so who knows what chaos could potentially erupt on the broadcast!

- The X Division Championship Tournament continues with another semifinal featuring Alex Shelley taking on Eric Young. The finals to crown a new champion will take place at “Genesis” on January 11.

- One-half of the TNA World Tag Team Champions, Robert Roode of Beer Money, will battle “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan

- TNA Women’s Champion Awesome Kong will be in action

All this and much more on Thursday’s new iMPACT! broadcast on SpikeTV starting at 9pm ET

Kurt Angle v. BG James? REALLY? Did they just figure their ratings would fall tonight anyway because of the BCS so they might as well figure out the crappiest opponent possible for Kurt Angle?

Sure, it makes sense in the storyline-wise, but BG is about as “you can’t wrestle” chant-worthy as anybody I can think of on the TNA roster. Whatever.

WWE Monday Night Raw Discussion: Punk v. Regal, IC Title

Written by Lex on Monday, January 5th, 2009 in Live Discussion, Raw, WWE.

Tonight’s Raw looks to be interesting, especially if some of the rumors floating around on the web right now turn out to be true (highly unlikely). I won’t get into details since it might constitute spoilers, but feel free to do some reasearch for yourself.

As for tonight’s confirmed card, here’s what we’ve got:

  • Intercontinental Championship: CM Punk v. William Regal(c)
  • The Miz and John Morrison v. Rey Myterio and Kofi Kingston
  • Kelly Kelly v. Jillian Hall
  • Glamarella v. Golddust and Melina

I think we’re all assuming that the IC Title match will be stellar–let’s just hope they give it the right amount of time.

Even with that match, I’ll be flipping back and forth between this and the Texas/OSU game. For once, I actually hope that Texas wins (I gotta support the Big 12).

WWE Smackdown Discussion: OMG! Kizarny Debuts!!!

Written by Lex on Friday, January 2nd, 2009 in Live Discussion, Smackdown, WWE.

Here’s a non-spoiler match listing for tonight’s episode of Smackdown, courtesy PWInsider.com:

  • Matt & Jeff Hardy vs. Edge & Big Show
  • Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder vs. Fit Finlay & Great Khali
  • Brian Kendrick & Ezekiel Jackson vs. Jesse & Festus
  • Vladimir Kozlov vs. Hurricane Helms
  • Kizarny vs. MVP
  • Vickie Guerrero, Triple H, Eve Torres, Michelle McCool, Shelton Benjamin, The Undertaker, Chavo Guerrero and Mr. Kennedy will also appear on the show.

Yes, you read that correctly: Kizarny v. MVP. What a disgrace–I think we all know what’s going to happen, there. This whole “losing every match angle” is getting really, really old.

ECW on Sci-Fi Discussion: Hardy v. Henry

Written by Lex on Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 in ECW, Live Discussion, WWE.

Matt Hardy and Mark Henry will face off yet again on ECW tonight. I’m assuming the match is non-title.

In addition, Miz and Morrison will kick off the show with a live edition of the Dirt Sheet.

WWE Monday Night Raw Discussion: Race to the Rumble

Written by Lex on Monday, December 29th, 2008 in Live Discussion, Raw, WWE.

Tonight’s Raw will go a long way in setting up what’s going down at the Royal Rumble on January 25. That’s right, the WWE is actually building a PPV a month ahead of time! It’s a miracle.

It’s also a miracle that we’re getting a Fatal Four Way tonight on Raw. JBL, HBK, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho will face off to determine the challenger for John Cena’s title at the Royal Rumble. As I said on the podcast on Friday, I’d like to see HBK help JBL win this match.

I’ve always enjoyed the Fatal Four Way concept as opposed to the Triple Threat, so this should be a nice change of pace considering the WWE tends to break out the Triple Threat title matches about every other month now. Speaking of multiple-competitor formats, whatever happened to the Six Pack Challenge? Or what if you had five wrestlers in there…would that be a Freaky Five-Way? Sounds like something off Spice Channel.

Anyways, REALLY speaking of multiple-competitor formats, there will also be a Divas Battle Royale match tonight to decide the number one contender for Beth Phoenix’s WWE Women’s Title. Candice Michelle, Jillian Hall, Mickie James, Katie Lea Burchill, Kelly Kelly and Melina will battle for the shot. Based on her push as of late, I’d bet Melina is booked to this one, although they could try to pull the Candice “surprise” (ugh).

As James Caldwell of the PW Torch points out
, the Divas Battle Royale is dangerous–it has a history of injuries, including Ashley Massaro’s in 2006. Let’s hope the ladies stay safe tonight.

UFC 92 Discussion: The Ultimate 2008

Written by Aaron on Saturday, December 27th, 2008 in Live Discussion, UFC.

Tonight’s UFC 92 show is absolutely packed. Crossover wrestling fans might be disappointed that Brock Lesnar is not on the card, but never fear. The UFC has three huge main event fights on tonight’s main card, including two five-round title fights:

  • Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans
  • Interim Heavyweight Championship bout: Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir
  • Light Heavyweight bout: Quinton Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva
  • Heavyweight bout: Cheick Kongo vs. Mostapha Al Turk
  • Middleweight bout: C.B. Dollaway vs.  Mike Massenzio

As you might have seen in today’s edition of “The Shoot,” I think Jackson and Silva will steal the show. I’d love to see Rampage get the monkey off his back and beat Silva, especially consider what’s been going on in his personal life since his last fight.

Mir and Nogueira should showcase world-class jiu-jitsu: I’m not sure who will win this one, but I’m leaning toward Nogueira.

In the final fight of the night, I’ll take Rashad Evans–Griffin should have lost his fight against Rampage, and I think it will catch up with him tonight. Karma’s a bitch, and Evans seems to be fighting on another level right now.

There are several fights on the undercard that are highly noteworthy, as well:

  • Middleweight bout: Yushin Okami vs. Dean Lister
  • Heavyweight bout: Antoni Hardonk vs. Mike Wessel
  • Light Heavyweight bout: Matt Hamill vs. Reese Andy
  • Welterweight bout: Brad Blackburn vs. Ryo Chonan
  • Heavyweight bout: Dan Evensen vs. Patrick Barry

Seeing both Okami and fan-favorite Matt Hamill on the undercard proves how big tonight’s show is. If those fights aren’t show during the PPV, you can always catch them at UFC.com after the show goes off the air.
