There’s a lot going on in Ring of Honor right now, so I thought I’d hit you guys and gals up with a few tidbits.
If you’re a fan of ROH, you’re probably aware that Gabe Sapolsky has been officially let go as head booker for the promotion. According to PW Insider, he has been replaced by Adam Pearce, another great wrestling mind. Many of you might be familiar with him as he’s wrestled in both ROH and in other indy feds. Pearce also had a nice reign this year as NWA Champion, an joined Ian and I on the PWB Podcast Hotline earlier in the year.
I’m positive Adam Pearce will be a good replacement for Sapolsky, but one thing that PW Insider’s Mike Johnson said does have me a little concerned:
[ROH Owner Cary] Silkin made the call for a number of factors from a business side of things. There was a belief that the company needed a change and that having all the great wrestling in the world could only take them so far as they struggle to grow. While there was no denying what Sapolsky had done for the company, Silkin felt it was time for a new direction.
I’ve read lots of rumors that ROH is seeking a TV deal, so perhaps Silkin feels that the company is a bit too wrestling-heavy to go mainstream. Still, I think that’s the appeal of ROH–it’s set apart from TNA and the WWE by the quality of its matches and realistic nature of its storylines. Let’s hope ROH doesn’t change the formula too much.
In other news, Samoa Joe will be making a one-night-only return to an ROH ring at the PPV taping in Chicago Ridge on November 27. Joe’s match will not be shot for PPV–if you want to see it, you’ll have to get the DVD. Matches already annoucned for the PPV taping are huge: Nigel McGuinness will defend his ROH title against Bryan Danielson and Austin Aries will battle Jimmy Jacobs in an “I Quit” match. Personally, I can’t wait to see both of those matches. I’m really anticipating the “I Quit” match, as the Jacobs/Aries feud has been one of the best of the year.
